Northern California

Redwood Coast -- San Francisco -- San Mateo County -- Santa Cruz County -- Monterey County

photo    photo    photo

Northern California comprises the area from the Oregon border to the south end of Monterey Bay.
Although there are several Northern California counties that lie along the Pacific, there are few beach communities north of San Francisco due to the region's rocky terrain. Most Northern California residents live inland or in the coastal towns that run between San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay.
A mere 250,000 residents live in the three northernmost counties of Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino. This area is known as the Redwood Coast for the sequoias that thrive in the region.
More than 764,000 people live in San Francisco, which is the fourth largest city in the state. San Francisco is home to such landmarks as Alcatraz, Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Nearly 1.4 million residents live in San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. These regions are home to some of California's most scenic cities, including Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Pebble Beach and Carmel-by-the-Sea.
