   Monterey County is ideally located on the Monterey Peninsula, near the Pacific Ocean at Monterey Bay. Take the scenic 17-Mile Drive to get an overview of the rugged peninsula, which is home to historic Monterey, the fertile Salinas Valley, the dramatic coastline of Big Sur, the charming community of Carmel-by-the-Sea and the prestigious Pebble Beach golf course.
   Monterey County is steeped in history, from the early Spanish missions to the fishing and canning industry at Cannery Row. Learn about everything from the Spanish conquistadors to the sardine and whaling industries at the Maritime Museum of Monterey. Or get an up-close view of the region's sea otters, pelicans and gulls at the Museum of Natural History in Pacific Grove.
   Author John Steinbeck set many of his books in the Salinas Valley, including "Of Mice and Men" and “East of Eden," and the National Steinbeck Center honors the Nobel Prize winner's words and wisdom. Other attractions include the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Fisherman's Wharf, the Monterey Wine Country and the Laguna Seca racetrack.
   More than 413,000 residents live in Monterey County, which spans 3,322 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $265,800.
