Redwood Coast

Crescent City -- McKinleyville -- Eureka -- Fort Bragg

Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino are California's three northernmost counties, comprising an area known as the Redwood Coast. Fewer than 250,000 residents live in these three counties, which span a whopping 8,089 square miles.
The region's namesake tree, the coast redwood, thrives in the mild Pacific environment, which is also home to six major rivers.
Del Norte County offers forest trails, sandy beaches and whitewater rafting at the Smith River National Recreation Area. The coastline boasts three beautiful beaches and two functioning lighthouses: St. George Reef and Battery Point.

Humboldt County is home to a restored historic waterfront district in Eureka, which is also site of a former U.S. Army fort. Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a great spot for bird watching, particularly swans and migrating Canada geese. And keep your eyes open for Roosevelt elk, one of three elk species found in California.
Mendocino County is the region where the wine country meets the coast. A scenic loop drive takes visitors through dense redwood forests, along rugged ocean bluffs, over low mountains and through some of the most beautiful wine country in the state.
In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $121,100 in Del Norte County; $133,500 in Humboldt County; and $170,200 in Mendocino County.
