Eureka

Eureka History

Eureka is Latin for "I have found it," and there's plenty to find in this charming seaside community.
The city was founded in 1850 by miners who struck gold in the '49 Gold Rush. Ships soon arrived in Humboldt Bay, supplying the mining crews that worked inland at the Trinity and Klamath rivers.
In 1853, the Fort Humboldt military post was established to aid in conflict resolution between miners and the region's Native Americans. The fort, which was commanded by Ulysses S. Grant for several months, was abandoned in 1870. By this point, logging and fishing had joined mining as mainstays of the community.
Whalers also worked near Humboldt Bay in the late 1800s. The industry died out in the 20th century as the number of whales dwindled. Today, whale watchers come to Eureka and the Redwood Coast to view these magnificent creatures in the wild.
Visitors also come to Eureka to stroll through the historic Old Town waterfront. Many of the city's original buildings have been restored, including several Victorian homes.

Activities

Eureka boasts the largest collection of Victorian architecture in California. Highlights include the four-story Carson Mansion and the rose-colored gingerbread home known as the Pink Lady. You can watch antique woodworking machines in action at the Blue Ox Millworks and take a horse-drawn carriage tour of Old Town, a restored historic waterfront district that offers unique shops, artwork and fine dining.
The Clarke Historical Museum is located inside a 1912-era bank building. Exhibits show the history of Humboldt County, with an emphasis on the Victorian period. There is also a Native American wing featuring baskets, stoneware and other artifacts.
The Samoa Cookhouse Museum was originally established in the late 1800s as a lumber camp chowhouse. It now holds equipment and memorabilia from the lumber and logging industries. Learn more about the region's fishing and whaling history at the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum, which contains models, pieces of shipwrecked ships and two full-size row boats.
The Eureka Boardwalk is the place to watch modern-day ships enter Humboldt Bay. You can take a harbor cruise aboard the Madaket, which was built in 1910 to ferry workers to lumber mills around the bay. Or take a tour of Coast Oyster Co., which grows and harvests 90 percent of the oysters produced in California.
Fort Humboldt State Historic Park is home to a Native American and military museum, plus a historic logging exhibit on the site of the former U.S. Army fort. Most of the original buildings are gone, but the hospital and surgeons' quarters have been reconstructed, with more reconstruction planned as funding allows.
The Six Rivers National Forest is named for the tributaries contained within its boundaries: the Smith, Klamath, Trinity, Mad, Eel and Van Duzen. Much of the forest is accessible only by foot or horseback, but it's a great place to see rare and endangered birds such as the bald eagle and the peregrine falcon. Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary and Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge also also great spots for bird watching, particularly swans and migrating Canada geese.
Eureka is surrounded by redwoods, with many state and national forests only a short drive away. Even the local zoo at Sequoia Park is located amid 52 acres of redwoods. The Sequoia Park Zoo features an aviary, bear grotto and duck pond as well as a children's playground and picnic facilities.
