Fort BraggFort Bragg HistoryIn 1857, a military base was established on land formerly inhabited by the Pomo Indians. The outpost was named after Captain Braxton Bragg, who later became a Confederate general. Its purpose was to maintain order on the Mendocino Indian Reservation. Operations continued at Fort Bragg until 1864, when the post was disbanded.Fort Bragg is often confused with the North Carolina Marine base that bears the same name, but this California city has a history all its own. After the fort was abandoned, the reservation closed and the land was sold. Several lumber mills opened in the area, and business thrived due to the region's abundant redwood forests. Much of the lumber that helped to rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake came from Fort Bragg, which also became a major commercial fishing port for Mendocino County. Today, fishing, lumber and tourism are the primary industries of the small coastal community. ActivitiesMendocino County is known as the region where the wine country meets the coast, and there are several wineries close to Fort Bragg, including Fetzer Vineyards, Bonterra Vineyards and Handley Cellars. The Skunk Train runs 40 miles along a scenic route between Fort Bragg and Willits. You'll cross 30 bridges on the scenic redwood route, which also passes through two deep mountain tunnels. See more of the region's beauty at MacKerricher State Park, three miles north of Fort Bragg. The park offers a variety of habitats, including beaches, bluffs, forests and dunes. Seals live on the park's rocks, and more than 90 species of birds visit nearby Cleone Lake. Caspar Headlands State Beach has miles of undeveloped coast that are popular with fishermen and bird watchers. Caspar Headlands is also a good place to spot migrating gray whales. A more popular spot for beachcombers is Glass Beach, where years of pounding waves have deposited tons of polished glass onto the shore. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is the only public garden in the United States that directly faces the ocean. Another oceanside attraction is Noyo Harbor, which is the starting point for such water activities as fishing, kayaking and whale-watching charters. The harbor is also home to several fine restaurants and was featured in the fim "Overboard," featuring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Annual events include the Fort Bragg Whale Festival, the World's Largest Salmon Barbecue and Paul Bunyan Days.
