McKinleyvilleMcKinleyville HistoryMcKinleyville has had several names in its relatively short existence. In the 1860s, rancher Joe Dow established the small community of Dows Prairie on the banks of the Mad River. Dows Prairie remained sparsely populated until the late 1890s, when Isaac Minor began building businesses, including a general store, a dance hall and a lodge. In 1897, the growing town was renamed Minorsville, although some settlers called it McKinleyville, in honor of the president. The community went by both names until 1901, when President McKinley was assassinated. Minor and the townsfolk agreed that the city should indeed be called McKinleyville, and the moniker has stuck to this day. McKinleyville is home to the Eureka-Arcata Airport, which is the air gateway to Humboldt County. During World War II, the airport was used as a military training facility, and the site is now home to the Coast Guard's Air Rescue team. ActivitiesMcKinleyville is located in redwood country, and the town's Humboldt Tree Nursery helps to keep the region green. Fourteen million tree seedlings are grown annually to replant the national forests of California and Southern Oregon. Visit the nursery and take a tour to see the lifting, sorting and packing process in action. There are three parks in McKinleyville. Larissa Park is a small neighborhood park with a picnic area. Pierson Park is home to the city library, a picnic area and Azalea Hall, McKinleyville's social and senior center. And Hiller Park is a 35-acre natural area with trails, woods, picnic grounds, horseshoe pits, a softball diamond and a play structure. Hammond Trail Bridge rises over the Mad River as part of the Hammond Trail. The bridge, which links Arcata and McKinleyville, is used by walkers, joggers, bicyclists, equestrians and bird watchers. Clam Beach is a favorite spot for beachcombing, fishing and horseback riding. And each year, the Annual Pony Express Days & Rodeo brings music, pony rides and rodeo events to McKinleyville.
