San Francisco's cable cars were first tested in 1873. Nearly 10 million passengers
ride these national treasures each year.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower and the Transamerica Pyramid are three of the
city's most prominent landmarks.

The Golden Gate opened in 1937. On average, more than 111,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily.

Coit Tower is located atop Telegraph Hill. This is one of the most scenic sites in town,
offering great views of Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz and San Francisco Bay.

The Transamerica Pyramid was erected in 1972. The building, also known as the Spire,
is the tallest structure in San Francisco at 853 feet (260 meters).

The Dewey Monument was built in 1903 to honor Commodore George Dewey's victory
over the Spanish in 1898. The monument survived the 1906 earthquake and still stands
proudly in Union Square, which is home to several upscale shops and restaurants.

Many downtown buildings were built in the Beaux Arts style of architecture, including dome-topped City Hall.

North Beach is a popular Italian neighborhood famed for its great food. The local parish,
Saints Peter and Paul Church, is known as the Italian
Cathedral of San Francisco.

Some landmarks are known only to locals. Visit some of the city's diverse neighborhoods to find your own.
