Pacifica

Pacifica History

Because of Pacifica's proximity to the Bay Area, it serves as a bedroom community to San Francisco and other larger cities. Pacifica itself is comprised of several small towns that once lined the shores of the Pacific coast.
Between 1906 and 1920, the Ocean Shore Railway ran a high-speed train between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Small seaside communities developed along the rail line, including the beach towns of Edgemar, Linda Mar, Rockaway Beach and Sharp Park.

In 1957, several of these communities joined together and incorporated as a city. A contest was held to name the new town, and Pacifica (Spanish for "peace") was selected.
Today, Pacifica remains a peaceful alternative to its big-city neighbors. Although it's the largest city on the San Mateo County coast, Pacifica retains a small-town feel that makes it popular with locals and tourists alike.

Activities

Pacifica is a relatively new city, but it's home to the oldest building in San Mateo County: the Sanchez Adobe Historic Site. The adobe has served many functions throughout the years, including an Indian village, a mission farm, a cattle ranch, a hotel and a speakeasy. Today, the historic landmark holds relics of the Ohlone Indians and artifacts from the Spanish rancho days.
The Pacifica Visitors Center offers local guides and books of regional interest. The seaside facility features a display of a sea lion skeleton and an 8-foot-long jawbone from a baleen whale.
Pacifica Pier is great for fishing, and some anglers have caught salmon right off the pier.
Sweeney Ridge offers one of the most spectacular views of the Bay Area. You can see the bright lights of San Francisco Bay, three majestic mountains and the Farallon Islands, located a few miles offshore in the Pacific Ocean.
San Pedro Valley Park has several walking trails offering ocean vistas, a seasonal waterfall and wildlife viewing areas. A small museum contains displays of the plants, animals, insects and reptiles found on the grounds.
Milagra Ridge Park is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The park was site of a military command post during World War II. Today it is home to plants and wildlife, including two endangered butterflies: the mission blue and the San Bruno elfin.
In 1986, the city created Fog Fest to promote Pacifica and celebrate its coastal climate. More than 50,000 people attend the annual event, which features more than 190 arts and craft booths, live entertainment, and food and refreshments including the Fog Cutter, which was created especially for the event.

Beaches

Rockaway Beach, which is hidden away at Quarry Cove, is a popular sunbathing, surfing and fishing locale. Restaurants, shops and hotels are within walking distance of the beach, and hiking trails provide scenic views of the Pacific Ocean.
Pacifica State Beach has a wide, crescent-shaped shore that is ideal for sunbathing and fishing. Because of the cold water, swimming is not recommended.
Sharp Park State Beach is known for its large pelican population. The scenic beach is located beside a large park and golf course, and it's famed for its brown-tinged sand.
