Capitola

Capitola History

Capitola is one of California's oldest seaside resorts. Like many coastal towns, it was originally inhabited by Native Americans. The Soquel Indians lived on the land until Mission Santa Cruz was established in 1791. Mexico eventually took control of the region, and the governor's daughter, Martina Castro, obtained a grant to Soquel Rancho in 1833.
Soquel Rancho remained largely undeveloped until the California Gold Rush of 1849. Castro parceled out portions of the land to settlers who engaged in logging and agriculture, and Soquel Landing became a busy shipping point on northern Monterey Bay.
In 1869, German immigrant Frederick Hihn settled in the Soquel region. Hihn sensed that the seaside location could serve as a resort community, so he purchased much of the land and leased it to developer Samuel A. Hall. In 1874, Hall opened Camp Capitola, a seaside tent city that catered to travelers on the Santa Cruz-Watsonville Railroad.
Camp Capitola was named after the heroine in a popular novel, and it soon became as popular as its namesake. The small camping spot developed into a resort town with hot salt-water baths, a 160-room hotel and a Mediterranean-style village area. In 1882, Hihn began selling subdivided lots, and visitors flocked to the charming seaside community.
When Hihn died from pneumonia in 1919, his daughter sold Camp Capitola to Henry Allen Rispin, a Canadian oilman who renamed the city Capitola-by-the-Sea. Although the city thrived throughout the 1920s, the Depression dealt a blow to the tourism industry, and Capitola languished until after World War II.
The city of Capitola incorporated in 1949. Today, the longtime resort town has regained its allure. Capitola is a popular tourist stop along the Monterey coast, offering scenic views of the bay amid a small-town-village feel.

Activities

Capitola is known for its quaint shops and boutiques. Shop for bargains in the village area, or just take a stroll along the Esplanade, which offers a variety of stores and restaurants near Capitola Beach.
The Capitola Bay Marina is located near the Esplanade, beside the Capitola Wharf. Boats are available for charter or rental, and the seaside locale offers excellent views of Monterey Bay.
Each year, Capitola residents and their dogs strut their stuff at the Canine Parade and Dog Festival. The highlight of the day is the popular costume contest, where you can see everything from bonneted bulldogs to wig-wearing Westies.
Other annual events include the Begonia Festival, the Capitola Kite Classic and the Capitola Art & Wine Festival.
