Hermosa Beach History

   In its early days, Hermosa Beach was part of Rancho Sausal Redondo, a vast farmland covered with fields of grain and barley. In 1900, developers bought 1,500 acres of the land and named it Hermosa, which means "beautiful" in Spanish. Those who have visited this charming beach community know that the name is well-suited to the area.
   The first pier was built in 1904. The wooden structure eventually washed away and was later torn down. A new pier was erected, as was an auditorium building that now houses the Los Angeles County Life Guard Service. Today, the Hermosa Beach Municipal Pier is 1,228 feet long and offers year-round fishing.
   When the town was incorporated in 1907, the deed stated that the two-mile stretch of ocean property comprising Hermosa Beach was to be held as a non-commercial beach playground. Modern-day residents still benefit from the city founders' vision, and Hermosa Beach remains an outdoor-lovers' paradise that boasts fishing, swimming and surfing opportunities.

Activities

   Hermosa Beach offers a bevy of entertainment options, from jazz and rock clubs to comedy and magic shows. It is home to several cultural organizations, including the Hermosa Beach Historical Society and the Hermosa Beach Civic Theater. Food lovers can attend the weekly farmers market, which offers fresh flowers, produce and other items.
   There are 20 parks in Hermosa Beach as well as year-round beach activities. Each year, the city holds Fiesta Hermosa, a three-day event featuring music, art, food and fun. The city also hosts the Annual Surf Festival, which draws participants from across the state and around the world.

Schools

   There are three schools in Hermosa Beach:

• Hermosa View Elementary (K-2)
• Hermosa Valley Elementary (3-8)
• Our Lady of Guadalupe (private)

   High school students attend nearby Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach or Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach.

Beaches

   Hermosa Beach runs parallel to The Strand. Amenities include swimming, surfing, showers, biking, boating, volleyball, dining, restrooms and parking. The Hermosa Beach Municipal Pier lies at the foot of Pier Avenue.
