Sunset Beach History

   Sunset Beach is an unincorporated community in northern Orange County. Although it's less than 10 miles from Long Beach, the community has a small-town feel that attracts residents and visitors passing through on the Pacific Coast Highway.
   The community began in the early 1900s. Tourists came to the area via Pacific Electric "Red Cars," a trolley system that carried commuters and sightseers to the cities, fruit groves and beach communities of Southern California. Small cottages and businesses soon sprang up in the area, which garnered the name Sunset Beach.
   Today, Sunset Beach is known for its whimsical post office, where locals gather to hear the latest news and gossip, and for the small stores and restaurants that offer travelers a nice spot to shop or stop for a meal.
   In 1997, the short-lived soap opera "Sunset Beach" brought interest to the community, but locals say the steamy program bore no resemblance to their quiet community.

Activities

   The community of Sunset Beach is full of small-town charm. A local group sponsors annual activities such as the Mothers Day Weekend Art Festival, the Milelong Garage Sale and a Christmas parking lot "No Parade."
   The pace in Sunset Beach may be laid back, but it's located near several larger beach cities, including Seal Beach to the north and Huntington Beach to the south. The quiet community is also a mere nine miles from the bright lights of Long Beach.
