CoronadoCoronado HistoryIn the 1600s, Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino sighted a group of islands off the Southern California coast and named them Las Yslas Coronadas. The islands remained uninhabited for almost 200 years, when they were rediscovered by local whalers. One particular island was deemed a perfect site for a harbor, due to its location between the Pacific Ocean, Glorietta Bay and San Diego Bay. "The island or peninsula in the Port of San Diego," as it was named on an 1846 land grant, was soon simply known as Coronado Island. In 1885, a group of investors bought the island, hoping to create a resort community. The Coronado Beach Company set up shop, and the San Diego and Coronado Ferry Company made its first run to the mainland in 1886. Hotels and businesses soon followed, and tourists flocked to the island. Wealthy visitors stayed at the upscale Hotel del Coronado, while others flocked to the island's Tent City, which featured swimming facilities, carnival booths, a Ferris wheel and even a bullfighting area. Coronado remained a popular destination among industrial tycoons and Hollywood stars in the early 20th century. North Island Naval Air Station opened in 1917, bringing military troops and their families to the island, and other residents soon were drawn by Coronado's small-town charms. The Coronado Bay Bridge was built 1969 to connect the island to the mainland. The two-mile span is usually open only to autos, but it occasionally is closed for marathons and other foot races. Coronado remains an island of serenity amid the bustling city of San Diego. It truly is the "Crown City" of Southern California. ActivitiesLearn more about the island's storied past at the Coronado Beach Historical Museum, featuring more than 100 exhibits and photos inside an 1898 Victorian-era home.Hotel del Coronado is the most-recognized structure on the island. Built in 1888, the Victorian-style hotel features towers, turrets and gingerbread trim. The hotel's Hall of History tells the stories of the kings, queens, presidents and celebrities who have passed through the famous resort, which is a designated National Historic Landmark. Coronado Village features quaint streets lined with boutiques, stores and restaurants. There is an island bike path, a golf course and full beach access. Orange Avenue is a historic business district with a small-town feel. And Ferry Landing Marketplace features a collection of shops, restaurants and art galleries. Take a gondola ride through the Coronado Cays Canals, or head to Glorietta Bay Marina for sailboats, paddleboats, jet skis and deep-sea fishing. Annual events include Taste of Coronado, the Independence Day Parade, Oktoberfest and the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights.
