Imperial Beach

Imperial Beach History

Imperial Beach is the southwesterly most city in the continental United States. This gateway to Mexico is only five miles from the international border, and many of its residents claim Hispanic heritage.
Developer R.R. Morrison began selling land in the area in 1887. George Chaffey purchased several lots, which he developed into a resort area for residents of Imperial Valley, an agricultural region of Southern California.
The first municipal pier was built in 1909 and contained an odd machine known as the "Edwards Wave Motor," which hoped to generate electricity for the growing town. When the machine failed, it was removed from the pier, which made it a more attractive place to stroll. A boardwalk and bathhouse were built near the pier and stood for many years. A storm washed the original pier away in 1948, and several ill-fated piers have been constructed since then, the latest in 1988.
Imperial Beach voted to incorporate in 1956. Although many people think it is part of San Diego, it actually is its own independent city.

Activities

Many visitors pass through Imperial Beach on their way to Mexico. But if you take the time to stop stateside, you'll find plenty to do in Imperial Beach.
There are two wildlife sanctuaries located just south of the city: the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and the Tijuana River National Estuarine Sanctuary. Both are dedicated to protecting native birds and other endangered species. Border Field State Park also provides opportunities for hiking and birdwatching.
The Imperial Beach Fishing Pier is popular for surf fishing. Looking south from the pier, you can see the Plaza De Monumental, Tijuana's famous bull ring by the sea, just across the border.
The city has several peaceful parks, including Pier Plaza, which connects the center of the town with the beach. Pier Plaza is also home to Surfhenge Arches, a colorful sculpture inspired by the local surfing scene.
Imperial Beach is said to have one of the nation's best beaches for sandcastle building. Each year, the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition draws 200,000 spectators to view the artistic sculptures and enjoy the city's street fair.
Other annual events include the Imperial Beach Triathlon & Duathlon, the Chili & Jazz Festival, and Symphony on the Sand.

Beaches

Imperial Beach is just five miles from Mexico, which has looser water-quality standards than the United States. In the past, this meant that the waters near Imperial Beach were sometimes affected by northward offshore sewage flow. A new sewage treatment plant was recently built along the border, and the water is now much cleaner than in years past.
The city's 3.5 miles of shoreline provide opportunities for surfing, sunning and limited swimming. You can fish from the pier, which also offers an excellent view of nearby Tijuana, just across the border. And the sand at Imperial Beach is perfect for building sandcastles and other arty projects.
