Solana Beach

Solana Beach History

Solana translates to "sunny," and the small coastal city certainly lives up to its name.
In 1886, Charles Jones settled the region around Solana Beach, which he called Lockwood Mesa. The area's rich soil and sunny climate was ideal for growing grains and beans, and it was an agricultural site for many years.
Most of Lockwood Mesa was sold in 1922 to Col. Ed Fletcher, who decided to build a residential community near the beach. But Fletcher had a problem: The bluff views were nice, but access to the beach below was difficult. With help from some clever engineers, Fletcher eventually cut a gap in the bluffs, and the community of Solana Beach was born.

Activities

The Stevens Ranch House, built in the 1890s, is the oldest home in Solana Beach. Site of the Solana Beach Heritage Museum, the house features period furniture, scrapbooks and photos on the history of the area.
The Cedros Design District is home to dozens of trendy shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes.
The weekly Solana Beach Farmers' Market offers an assortment of fresh flowers, baked goods and produce.
   And don't forget the beach!

Beaches

Because of the lack of sand and crashing surf, some say Solana Beach is better-suited to surfers. Decide for yourself at one of the city's three beaches.
Fletcher Cove, a beach more cobblestone than sand, has a park that overlooks the ocean. Popular with surfers and body boarders, the beach also offers basketball, volleyball and shuffleboard courts.
Tide Beach Park, north of Fletcher Cove, is known for its peaceful tidepools. Swimmers and snorkelers are welcome.
Seascape Shores, south of Fletcher Cove, also offers beach access. Popular with surfers, this area may be a bit rough for swimming.
