Cayucos History

Cayucos, which is pronounced "ky-YOO-cuss," means "fishing canoe" or "kayak." The city was named for these vessels, which the Aleuts used to hunt sea otters in the Pacific Northwest and along the California coast.
In 1867, Captain James Cass settled on 320 acres of the original Spanish land grant of Rancho Moro y Cayucos. Cass built a pier, store and warehouse, and the community soon became a small port city known as Cass' Landing.
In 1875, William F. Babcock subdivided another section of the land grant, and the city of Cayucos was born.

Cayucos was blessed by the bounty its land and water provided. Besides fish and abalone, the region produced fruit, berries, alfalfa and beans. An influx of Swiss-Italian and Portuguese immigrants also created a thriving dairy industry in the area.
Today, Cayucos is a small beach community offering a moderate climate and scenic views of the Pacific. The city has also retained its Old West charm, right down to its historic buildings and wooden boardwalks.

Activities

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of activities in Cayucos. Go swimming or kayaking in the ocean, or explore tidepools at the beach. The nearby San Simeon State Parks offer great hiking and sightseeing opportunities.
Hardie Park has a fresh-water swimming pool, tennis courts, picnic tables, barbecue pits and a playground.
The public fishing pier at Cayucos State Beach is free and illuminated for night fishing. The pier is also site of the Cayucos Art Society Gallery.
Every six weeks, the Cayucos Art Association promotes a new show, complete with an opening reception.
The Cayucos Mural Society supports public art projects around the city. Murals depicting historical and environmental topics are located throughout town.
Besides art, Cayucos is known for its many antique and gift stores. Three times a year, the city hosts a Peddler's Faire that offers a large assortment of antiques and collectibles.
Other annual events include the Seafood Festival, the Portuguese Festival, the Cayucos Music Festival and the Carlin Soulé Memorial Polar Bear Dip.
