Morro Bay
Morro Bay History Morro Bay is located on the north end of the bay that shares its name. Both city and bay were named for Morro Rock, a local landmark that rises 576 feet out of the Pacific. The rock is the largest in a chain of extinct volcano peaks -- known as the Seven Sisters or the Nine Morros -- that runs for 12 miles along the coast.
ActivitiesMorro Bay Harbor is home to one of California's most productive commercial fishing fleets. Visitors can participate in various boating activities, such as kayak rental, bay cruises and fishing excursions. The harbor also provides an excellent view of the city's namesake, Morro Rock, which is known as the "Gibraltar of the Pacific."Embarcadero Street, located near the harbor, is a great spot to shop, dine or just stroll along the marina. Nearby Tidelands Children's Park is also a wonderful place to relax and watch the boats sail by. Morro Bay State Park features a lagoon and a natural bay habitat. The park offers opportunities for sailing, fishing, hiking and bird watching. It's also home to the Morro Bay State Park Museum of Natural History, which has exhibits on nautical and Native American life. Montana de Oro State Park has a varied landscape of streams, canyons, beaches and cliffs. Backpackers enjoy hiking the park's many trails, which are also open to mountain bikers and equestrians. Each year, the Morro Bay Harbor Festival celebrates the city's waterfront with a wine and seafood fair, music events, marine-related displays, and arts and craft vendors. Other annual events include the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival, the Lighted Boat Parade and the Morro Bay Jazz Festival.
