Isla VistaIsla Vista HistoryIsla Vista is a small community that borders the University of California - Santa Barbara. The area developed in the 1960s to provide student housing for the growing university. In the late '60s, Isla Vista became a hotbed of student activism, much of it targeting the Vietnam War. In 1970, the community gained national attention after rioters burned the Bank of America building. The town also hosted several pro-marijuana rallies, which were held in community parks. Today, Isla Vista is one of the most densely populated areas in California. Most residents are students, but the community is also home to middle-class families and a large number of immigrants. The town, which is unincorporated, remains loyal to its activist roots. There is no local government, and the local Parks and Recreation District is the most important political body in Isla Vista. A tip for visitors: Locals pronounce the town "EYE-la Veesta," not "IS-la Veesta." Or just use "I.V." for short. ActivitiesBecause Isla Vista is largely a college town, many events center around neighboring University of California - Santa Barbara.Del Playa Drive is the town's main street, running parallel to the ocean. Del Playa, which is home to several bars and nightclubs, has earned a mixed reputation for its rowdy weekend scene, which is mostly populated by college-age students. Despite the party atmosphere, there are also places of peace on Isla Vista, especially along the city's coastline. Because of the dangers of crumbling cliffs, swimming and sunning are frowned upon, although the bluffs offer spectacular views of the Pacific. Isla Vista was once a sprawling ranch, and the ranch's original Red Barn remains a community icon. The barn has been used as a concert venue, storage area and shelter. There are three parks located in downtown Isla Vista. Anisq'Oyo' Park features a rustic windmill and a large pond that's home to birds, frogs and turtles. Little Acorn Park has a historic wooden greenhouse that provides shade to visitors. Perfect Park is home to the Perfect Park Peace Monument, which commemorates the city's history of peaceful protest and social turmoil. The park also features winding trails and an open grassy area. Other parks located around Isla Vista include Children's Park, Pardall Gardens, Pescadero Blufftop and Window to the Sea.
