Oxnard

Oxnard History

Each year, Oxnard denizens gather for the annual Strawberry Festival. But few residents may know that their town began as a home to another sweet agricultural crop: the sugar beet.
In the late 1800s, Henry T. Oxnard built a sugar beet factory near modern-day Oxnard. The businessman originally intended to name the city after a Greek word for "sugar," but he eventually gave the new town his family name.
Oxnard was incorporated in 1903. The economy is still centered on agriculture, but it now also encompasses oil refining, commerce and the military.
There are several military installations near Oxnard, including Point Mugu Naval Air Station and the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion Center. The city is also known for its proximity to the Channel Islands, located just off the coast and accessible by boat.

Activities

There are several diverse museums in Oxnard, including:
  • The Carnegie Art Museum, built in 1907, featuring more than 350 paintings, drawings and photographs from noteworthy American artists.
  • The Ventura County Maritime Museum, featuring model ships, fine art and changing maritime exhibits.
  • The Otis Chandler Museum, housing classic and antique cars, sports cars and rare motorcycles.
  • The Gull Wing's Children's Museum, offering hands-on exhibits for children to explore, experiment and learn while having fun.
Heritage Square offers restored turn-of-the-century homes in a relaxed garden setting. The courtyards feature more than 140 varieties of shrubs, trees and flowers. Take a stroll at Oxnard Plaza Park, home to a charming Chinese pagoda built in 1910. Or visit Oxnard Park, home to the city's Mandalay Beach.
Channel Islands Harbor provides access to Channel Islands National Park, located just off the coast. Channel Islands National Park comprises five islands -- Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara -- that provide, boating, hiking, camping and whale-watching in a truly natural setting.
The harbor also offers a variety of activities, including the Celebration of the Whales, visits by the Tall Ships, Fireworks by the Sea and the annual Parade of Lights.
Other annual events include the Strawberry Festival, which is held every May, and the Salsa Festival, which heats things up each July.

Beaches

Oxnard is home to several beaches, many of which offer scenic views of the nearby Channel Islands.
Oxnard Park is home to Mandalay Beach, known for its easily accessible dunes along the ocean. You can fly a kite, lay back in the grass or enjoy a snack at one of the park's many barbecue areas. You'll also find volleyball courts, skating and jogging trails, and a large covered picnic area.
Hollywood Beach is a mile-long strip of white sand. Bask on the beach, paddle in the Pacific or play volleyball on the challenging sand courts.
Silver Strand Beach is great for surfing, but it's also a nice spot to relax in the sun. This mile-long stretch of silvery beach is a locals' favorite.
McGrath State Beach, just north of town, offers surf, sand and a popular camping area at the base of the Santa Clara Rivermouth.
And Ormond Beach is one of the few remaining tracts of coastal habitat in Southern California. Located on the shore between Port Hueneme and Point Mugu Naval Air Station, this two-mile stretch is good for hiking and bird-watching as well as traditional water-based activities.
