BelleairBelleair HistoryBelleair is a small Victorian-era village that's located along Clearwater Harbor, between Clearwater and Largo.Belleair grew in the shadow of the Belleview Biltmore Hotel, a luxury resort that opened in 1897. In 1917, the hotel was so large that it purchased a fire engine to help protect the property. The resort became one of few hotels with its own police force and fire department, both of which also served the residents of Belleair. At the start of World War II, the Belleview Biltmore was requisitioned by the Army Air Corps, which stationed troops in the luxury facility. The hotel's police force, fire department and post office moved off site and were formally assigned to the town of Belleair. Although Belleair was incorporated in 1923, it has not grown much over the years. Residents enjoy the small-town atmosphere and scenic location. The neighboring towns of Belleair Beach and Belleair Shore are located on a thin barrier island just across Clearwater Harbor, and Belleair Bluffs is just south of Belleair on the mainland. These newer towns are among the smallest communities in Pinellas County. ActivitiesClearwater Harbor and the neighboring Gulf of Mexico offer a variety of water-based activities, from fishing and sailing to diving and snorkeling. Take a stroll on the beach or a dip in the water. The beach is nearby, but the main attraction in Belleair is golf. Both the Belleair Country Club and the Belleview Biltmore Resort offer world-class amenities. For a less expensive option, try one of the public courses located in Clearwater or other neighboring communities. Besides golf, the Belleview Biltmore Resort offers fine dining, tennis, swimming and spa services. Tours of the stately wooden structure, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, are offered seven days a week. Belleair is also close to Tampa and St. Petersburg, which offer shopping, restaurants, amusement parks, museums and professional sporting events.
