Clearwater and Clearwater Beach
Clearwater and Clearwater Beach HistoryAlthough Clearwater is known primarily as a beach community, the city's roots lie in agriculture. In the early 1800s, settlers farmed vegetables and cotton on the land. Later that century, developer Henry Plant built a railroad through the region. To boost passenger business, Plant built several grand hotels along the coast, including the famed Belleview Biltmore in nearby Belleair. At that time, the city was known as Clear Water Harbor. In 1895, "Clearwater" became one word, and in 1906, "Harbor" was dropped entirely. The newly named Clearwater became a booming tourist destination, and the city was incorporated in 1915. Later that year, the first wooden bridge was built connecting Clearwater Beach to the mainland. Tourism waned during the Depression, but a few residents moved to the area, attracted by the warm weather and scenic coastal location. In 1948, the Philadelphia Phillies came to town for spring training. Today, more than 113,000 fans watch the team play preseason games each year at Bright House Networks Field. The city also is a popular Spring Break destination, and Clearwater Beach is among the top-rated beaches in the nation for cleanliness, safety and scenery. ActivitiesClearwater Harbor and the neighboring Gulf of Mexico offer a variety of water-based activities, from fishing and sailing to diving and snorkeling. Take a dip in the water or a stroll along four-mile Clearwater Beach, which is the pride of the city.Pier 60 is the focal point of Clearwater Beach. The 1,050-foot fishing pier has a bait house, playgrounds and a sightseeing area. Each evening, Pier 60 Park is home to Sunsets at Pier 60, a nightly street festival packed with fun and entertainment. The Clearwater Marina is home to the largest fishing fleet on the state's Central West Coast. The marina also offers sightseeing cruises, sailing adventures, dining, dancing and dolphin watching. Clearwater Marine Aquarium is one of only eight national facilities authorized to rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals. The aquarium also offers up-close encounters with bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, otters, stingrays and coral reefs. At Moccasin Lake Nature Park, you'll see more of Florida's native wildlife, including egrets, ospreys, butterflies and the occasional alligator. The 51-acre nature preserve also has natural and board walked trails, a five-acre lake, an interpretive center and live wildlife exhibits. Just off shore, the 1,500-acre Weedon Island Preserve offers nine miles of hiking trails, four miles of canoe trails and an elevated boardwalk that lets visitors view native flora and fauna. The preserve is home to dozens of species, from fish and dolphins to snakes, deer, bobcats and raccoons. Another offshore park, 95-acre Sand Key Park, opened to the public in 1984. Located on a small barrier island in Clearwater Harbor, Sand Key has a beach as well as a traditional park. There are no boat launch facilities at the park, but swimmers can venture into the warm, lifeguard-protected waters. There are 26 public and semi-private golf courses in the region, including Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club, Clearwater Golf Park, Cove Cay Country Club and On Top of the World Golf Club. You can watch the Philadelphia Phillies practice their skills each year during spring training, or watch a full game played by their Florida State League affiliate team, the Clearwater Threshers. Annual events include the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, the Fun 'N Sun Festival, Kids Week and the Florida Birding Festival.
