Harbor Bluffs and Largo

Harbor Bluffs and Largo History

Harbor Bluffs is a neighborhood on the outskirts of Largo in Central West Florida. Harbor Bluffs is located along Clearwater Harbor, while the larger city of Largo is inland.
Largo started as a train-station stop in the late 1800s and was named after a nearby lake. The small community soon became famed as a citrus-growing region, and it incorporated as a town in 1905.
In the late 1920s, a severe freeze crippled the citrus industry. Another freeze in 1962 prompted several owners to sell their groves to developers, who built tract housing and subdivisions on the land.
In 1970, the town of Largo officially became a city after annexing several smaller communities. Harbor Bluffs is one of the more popular neighborhoods in Largo, which is located just south of the resort city of Clearwater.

Activities

Harbor Bluffs is located along Clearwater Harbor, and the Gulf of Mexico is just across the way. Both bodies of water provide excellent fishing conditions and water-based activities ranging from boating and sailing to diving and snorkeling.
Most activities in Harbor Bluffs are beach- or water-related, but landlocked Largo has its share of activities as well.
The Largo Cultural Center offers performances from touring groups, the local Suncoast Singers and Largo's Eight O'Clock Theatre.
Heritage Village features a living history museum with restored homes and exhibits that depict Florida's pioneer lifestyle. Spinning, weaving and other exhibitions are held on the wooded grounds.
Pinewood Cultural Park and the Florida Botanical Gardens is a 190-acre park featuring walking tours and workshops that let visitors learn about the environment while they experience it first-hand. Pinewood Cultural Park is also home to The Gulf Coast Museum of Art, which features contemporary art created by Florida and southeastern artists.
John Bonner Nature Park offers picnic facilities, a playground and two birding trails overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. And the Largo Central Railroad has 1.2 miles of track running through the beautifully landscaped Largo Central Park.
Harbor Springs and Largo are also close to Tampa and St. Petersburg, which offer shopping, fine dining, amusement parks, museums and professional sporting events.
