Indian Rocks Beach

Indian Rocks Beach History

Legend says that years ago, an ailing Indian chief came to the rocky shores of Boca Ciega Bay to drink from a miraculous healing spring. We'll never know if the spring existed, but the red stones of Indian Rocks Beach remain to this day.
Indian Rocks Beach is located on a thin barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay. The small city has more than 20 beach access points that offer active recreation areas and stunning sunset views.
Modern-day Indian Rocks Beach was initially developed in the 1920s as a weekend getaway spot for wealthy Tampa denizens. Today it's home to more than 5,000 year-round residents as well as a large population of wintering "snowbirds."
Although neighboring Indian Shores was once called Indian Rocks Beach South Shore, it shortened its name in 1973 to maintain a separate identity from its northern sister city. Together, these communities provide a peaceful retreat just miles from the larger cities of Clearwater, Tampa and St. Petersburg.

Activities

Both the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay provide a variety of water-based activities ranging from boating and swimming to diving and snorkeling. Golf courses, hiking trails and bike paths are located in neighboring communities.
You can learn more about the city's past at the Indian Rocks Area Historical Museum, which is adjacent to Indian Rocks Beach City Hall.
The Beach Art Center holds several events throughout the year, including Beauty and the Beach, and the Fall Festival. These popular events  attract up to 4,000 people, who sample food, music, and regional arts and crafts.
Indian Rocks Beach is also close to Clearwater, Tampa and St. Petersburg, which offer shopping, fine dining, amusement parks, museums and professional sporting events.
