Indian ShoresIndian Shores HistoryIndian Shores is an upscale beach community located south of Indian Rocks Beach on Florida's Central West coast. The town was originally called Indian Rocks Beach South Shore, but it shortened its name in 1973.Indian Shores sits on a thin barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay. There are few year-round residents, but the population soars each winter when the Northern "snowbirds" arrive. The community was once home to one of America's kitschiest attractions: Exotic Tiki Gardens. The jungle attraction opened to the public in 1964, featuring caged birds, trained monkeys and Polynesian-themed entertainment. The owners sold the property in the late 1980s, and a public park was erected on the site in 1990. Although Tiki Gardens' animals are long gone, wildlife still abounds in Indian Shores. The town is home to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, which is the largest nonprofit wild bird hospital in the United States. Each year, more than 10,000 birds are admitted to the hospital for care, and nearly 10 times that amount of people visit the center. ActivitiesBoth the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay provide a variety of water-based activities ranging from boating and swimming to diving and snorkeling. Golf courses, hiking trails and bike paths are located in neighboring communities.Founded in 1971 by zoologist Ralph Heath, the SunCoast Seabird Sanctuary is the largest nonprofit wild bird hospital in the United States. At any given time, visitors can view more than 600 wild birds, including pelicans, herons, egrets, owls, hawks and shorebirds. Tiki Gardens County Park is a 9.9-acre facility located on the grounds of the former Exotic Tiki Gardens. Other local parks are Estelle Harper Park, Town Square Nature Park and Mayor Bob McEwen Veterans Park. Indian Shores is also close to Clearwater, Tampa and St. Petersburg, which offer shopping, fine dining, amusement parks, museums and professional sporting events.
