Oakhurst Shores and Seminole

Oakhurst Shores and Seminole History

Oakhurst Shores is a neighborhood on the outskirts of Seminole in Central West Florida. Oakhurst Shores is located along Boca Ciega Bay, while the city of Seminole is inland on the Pinellas Peninsula.
Seminole is a relatively new community. In 1962, a steering committee formed the Seminole Chamber of Commerce. A bank, post office and library soon followed, and Seminole was incorporated as a city in 1970. The 2000 Census recorded 10,890 residents within the Seminole city limits, but recent annexations have boosted the population to more than 17,000.
Although Seminole shares its name with a Native Floridian tribe, the city has a limited Indian influence. The Timucuans who once lived on the Pinellas Peninsula are long gone, and the annual Seminole Pow Wow Festival is more of a street carnival than a Native American gathering.
Most Oakhurst Shores and Seminole residents moved to the community within the last few years, bringing their own culture and traditions with them. Seminole remains popular with retirees, but the number of younger people and families is growing.

Activities

Oakhurst Shores is located along Boca Ciega Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico is just across the way. Both bodies of water provide excellent fishing conditions and water-based activities ranging from boating and sailing to diving and snorkeling.
Most activities in Oakhurst Shores are beach- or water-related, but landlocked Seminole has its share of activities as well.
Golfers can hit the links at the Tides Golf Club, the Seminole Lake Country Club, or the Bardmoor Golf & Tennis Club, all of which are located within the city. There are also several courses, both private and public, located in neighboring communities.
There are three parks in Seminole. Seminole City Park is a traditional park that features outdoor events such as the Music in the Park concert series. Boca Ciega Millennium Park has picnic areas, five ponds, a 35-foot observation tower, and boardwalks and bike paths. And Lake Seminole Park features a two-mile recreation trail, two ponds and a large play area.
Lake Seminole Park also is home to a boat ramp for Seminole Lake, which features boating, fishing and water-skiing.
Seminole Mall has 50 stores and a food court. The mall is located a few miles from neighboring Indian Shores.
Oakhurst Shores and Seminole are also close to Tampa and St. Petersburg, which offer shopping, fine dining, amusement parks, museums and professional sporting events.
