South PasadenaSouth Pasadena HistoryFlorida has long been known as a retirement community, and South Pasadena is a popular spot for relocating seniors. According to the 2000 Census, 63 percent of South Pasadena's residents are 65 or older, and the median age is 71. South Pasadena's motto is "Our Place in the Sun," and that certainly holds true. The warm weather has a physical as well as psychological benefit, and the sheltered location along Boca Ciega Bay offers calming winds and mild waves. South Pasadena was incorporated as a city in 1955. Before that, it was a small community called Coreytown, which was home to just 23 residents. Today, the city has nearly 6,000 residents who enjoy the scenic location and small-town environment. Although more than half of South Pasadena's residents live alone, there are plenty of activities to keep them busy. The gulf and several beaches are nearby, as are the larger cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg. There are parks scattered throughout the community, and the city sponsors several events, including bingo, art shows and waterfront walks. ActivitiesMany retirees enjoy the quiet lifestyle that South Pasadena has to offer. The city hosts a yearly Spring Art Festival, weekly bingo games and an annual stroll along the main waterfront streets. There are four parks in South Pasadena. Duryea Park offers tennis courts, a playground, picnic facilities and an educational bay walk.
