Folly BeachFolly Beach HistoryFolly Beach is a unique beach town nicknamed "The Edge of America" for its ideal location just off Charleston's shore on Folly Island. Folly Beach enjoys a strong, growing economy, and although residents look forward to a bright future, they also aim to preserve the island's rich past.Although there are plenty of fun activities to be had on Folly Beach, its name comes from the Old English word "folly," which refers to a group of trees or a thicket. Folly Island and neighboring Morris Island also were both known as Coffin Island, because the barrier islands were used as quarantine areas in the 1700s and early 1800s. During the Civil War, Union troops occupied Folly Island. At that time, the island comprised two areas: Big Folly and Little Folly. The island was used more as a base than a battlefield, although troops on Little Folly did see some action. In 1862, the Morris Island Lighthouse began serving the Port of Charleston on the edge of Folly Island. The famed striped lighthouse remained operational until 1962, when it was decommissioned and its duties were reassigned to the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse. Today, the Morris Island Lighthouse is a top attraction for Folly Beach, and it was featured on a U.S. stamp in 2003. ActivitiesFolly Beach's coast stretches six miles and is the perfect place to catch a wave, sail the shores, walk the pier, ride bikes, walk dogs, view dolphins, view vibrant sunsets and indulge in a variety of cuisines. For those seeking adventure in the "big city," historic Charleston is located just 11 miles away. There's plenty to do in and around Folly Beach, including angling at the Folly Beach fishing pier, turtle watching, golfing or antique shopping. Folly Beach County Park has more than 2,000 feet of ocean frontage, offering a variety of water-based activities. Frequent surfing contests are held at the famous "Washout" surfing spot on the east end of Folly Beach. And the Morris Island Lighthouse and old abandoned Coast Guard property offer more seaside character to the community.
