Isle of PalmsIsle of Palms HistoryIsle of Palms is a barrier island located on the South Carolina coast, about 13 miles from downtown Charleston. With its seven miles of wide, pristine beach, Isle of Palms is a popular vacation destination as well as a great place to call home.Originally named Hunting Island and then Long Island, Isle of Palms was first inhabited by the Seewee Indians. Like many of the barrier islands that surround Charleston Harbor, Isle of Palms was largely unsettled until the late 1800s. During the Civil War, the area was the departure point for the CSS Hunley, a Confederate submarine that sank in the waters of neighboring Sullivan's Island. In 1899, developer J.S. Lawrence purchased the land and renamed it Isle of Palms. A 50-room resort hotel was built in 1906, followed by a beach pavilion and amusement park in 1912. Isle of Palms soon became one of the most popular of Charleston's barrier islands due to its recreational thrills and scenic locale. Most visitors came to the island by ferry. By the time a bridge to Isle of Palms was erected in 1946, the land had been sold to J.C. Long, who used part of the island to create a low-cost housing development for returning soldiers. The amusement park is long gone, but Isle of Palms still offers a variety of amenities, whether it's along the public beach or at the upscale Wild Dunes resort. ActivitiesIsle of Palms offers biking, tennis, boat charters, and even kayaking and canoeing. The local marina often holds fishing contests, or you can just cast a line from the beach. The Wild Dunes resort offers luxurious oceanfront accommodations on 900 acres of land. Wild Dunes is home to 2.5 miles of wide sandy beach and two 18-hole championship golf courses. Its Links course was ranked in the "World's Greatest 100" by Golf Digest. The island and its waters are also home to a variety of wildlife, from osprey and pelicans to dolphins and sea turtles. Beachcombers love the selection of shells that wash ashore on Isle of Palms, which is just a stone's throw from the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse.
