Kiawah IslandKiawah Island HistoryKiawah Island is a master-planned golf community that has integrated its residents' needs into the island's native beaches, marshes and woodlands. The island was deeded to George Raynor in 1699 by the Lords Proprietors and has changed hands only four times since. Charleston's prominent Vanderhorst family owned the island for 180 years before selling it to C.C. Royal of Aiken in 1950 for hunting and fishing. The Kiawah Island Company Ltd. bought the island from the Royal family in 1974, and Kiawah Resort Associates bought the Island in 1988 for development.
