Kiawah IslandKiawah Island HistoryKiawah Island is a master-planned golf community that has integrated its residents' needs into the island's native beaches, marshes and woodlands. The result is an exceptional lifestyle known for championship golf, beautiful beaches and an active lifestyle. Located south of Charleston, the island is home to just over 1,000 full-time residents.Kiawah Island was named for the Kiawah Indians, who inhabited the region until the late 1600s. The island was deeded to George Raynor in 1699 by the Lords Proprietors and has changed hands only four times since. Charleston's prominent Vanderhorst family owned the island for 180 years before selling it to C.C. Royal of Aiken in 1950 for hunting and fishing. The Kiawah Island Company Ltd. bought the island from the Royal family in 1974, and Kiawah Resort Associates bought the Island in 1988 for development. Rich in natural beauty, Kiawah's 10,000 natural woodland acres stretch along a windswept Atlantic and 10 miles of unspoiled beach front. This natural haven for wildlife -- including tawny deer, blue herons and snowy egrets -- has an average year-round temperature of 65 degrees. Luxury accommodations are carefully tucked away in two resort villages offering exquisite dining and shopping delights. ActivitiesKiawah Island offers golf, tennis, boating, shopping and dining. Children love Kiawah's 21-acre Night Heron Park, with its Olympic-sized pool, recreation pavilion and playing field.
