Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach History

Myrtle Beach is the jewel in South Carolina's Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of coastline with white sandy beaches and sparkling waterways. The city has been a popular Spring Break getaway since the 1960s, but its history dates back more than 100 years.
In the late 1800s, the Burroughs & Collins Company began developing the area that's home to modern-day Myrtle Beach. The firm started as a timber and turpentine producer, but the owners soon saw the resort potential along the Grand Strand.
In 1901, Burroughs & Collins built the beach's first hotel, the Seaside Inn. At that time, oceanfront lots cost $25, and buyers got an extra lot for free if they built a house valued at $500 or more.  The community was called New Town until a newspaper contest was held to create a new name for the burgeoning city. Mrs. F.E. Burroughs won the contest with her suggestion of Myrtle Beach, which she named after the wax myrtle trees that grew wild along the city's shore.
With more than 100 beautiful and challenging courses, Myrtle Beach is internationally recognized as the Golf Capital of the World. But that's not all this resort town has to offer. Southern Living magazine's Readers Choice Awards named Myrtle Beach the tops in three categories: Favorite Beach, Favorite Family Destination and Favorite Shopping Spot. Whether you're a seasonal visitor or a year-round resident, Myrtle Beach has something to keep you occupied!

Activities

The Golf Capital of the World is home to more than 100 golf courses as well as several par 3 courses and miniature golf parks.
Live theater attracts famous entertainers, while the smaller clubs offer a variety of entertainment options. The local symphony and little theater groups present a nice mix of plays and operettas. And more than 1,200 restaurants offer exotic cuisine as well as traditional favorites.

There are plenty of activities for the active or passive sports fan. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans is the local farm team for baseball's Atlanta Braves. The Intercoastal Waterway offers fishing, boating and other water activities. Tennis and polo are also offered along with biking, running and Rollerblading.
