Pawleys IslandPawleys Island HistoryPawleys Island is among the oldest resort areas in America. It once catered to wealthy planters, but today it's a peaceful family getaway. In the early 1800s, the Low Country was home to affluent planters who grew rice and indigo, premium crops that earned more than the neighboring fields of cotton and tobacco. To escape the heat and threat of malaria on their inland plantations, many planters moved their families to Pawleys Island during the summer months, setting up homes in small cottages that lined the beach. Nine of these cottages still remain in the island's historic district. Today, many homes on Pawleys Island are used solely by summer dwellers, just like in the planters' days. Only 138 residents live on the island year-round, but the number swells into the thousands during the vacation season. There are several homes on this narrow island, but no stores. ActivitiesPawleys Island lies along the Atlantic, offering miles of sandy white beaches and preserved acreage. History abounds on the island and in other small communities that line the the Waccamaw River. Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park are located nearby.Neighboring Litchfield Beach is a tennis fan's paradise, featuring USTA and regional tournaments. There are eight public golf courses in the region as well as a private course, The Reserve, that was designed by Greg Norman. Miles of walking and biking trails are also available for the whole family to enjoy.
