Sullivan's Island History

   Located at the entrance of Charleston Harbor, Sullivan's Island is home to a famous lighthouse and a variety of charming homes. Whether you want a year-round residence, a vacation retreat or an investment property, Sullivan's Island will meet your needs.
   Sullivan's Island is home to the most modern lighthouse in the United States. Unlike most lighthouses -- which feature long, winding staircases -- here you'll find an elevator to take you to the top. Built in 1962, the 140-foot-tall tower marks the entrance to Charleston Harbor. Its 28 million candlepower lamp can be seen 26 miles out to sea, providing a helpful guide for sailors during fierce ocean squalls.
   The island is also home to Fort Moultrie, a military stronghold whose history dates back more than 200 years. Fort Moultrie was site of the first decisive victory in the American Revolution and the firing onto Fort Sumter during the first battle of the Civil War. The fort has been rebuilt several times, and the third Fort Moultrie, which was built in 1809, still stands today. Take a tour of Fort Moultrie to see how coastal defenses have evolved -- and get a great glimpse of the South Carolina coast while you're there.

Activities

   Sullivan's Island is a small community, but it offers many things to do and see. Dine in the quaint restaurant district, play a game on the public tennis courts or visit the gazebo at the community playground. Take a quiet walk along the beach, where you can listen to the surf and watch dolphins pass by. The sea air is scented with jasmine and honeysuckle, and seagulls and pelicans glide through the sky.
   More than 1,900 residents call Sullivan's Island home, and many more visit this casual island community, where the unhurried pace lets you appreciate the finer things in life.

Homes

   Most homes on Sullivan's Island are located on the water, from lagoons and tidal creeks to oceanfront and deep-water properties. Many homes also offer private or community pools, boat docks, and water access. With friendly neighbors and scenic views of Charleston and the Atlantic, this island community is full of Southern charm.

Schools

   There are no public schools on Sullivan's Island. Students attend classes in neighboring communities.
