Surfside BeachSurfside Beach HistorySurfside Beach is the Grand Strand's leading family beach as well as a popular retirement haven and bedroom community for Myrtle Beach. With a moderate climate, affordable housing and low crime rate, the region is known for its high quality of life.First named Roach's Beach, the land was used for lumber production and farming. In the early 1920s, George Holliday bought the land and renamed it Floral Beach in honor of his wife, Flora, and their daughter, Floramay. Floral Beach remained mostly undeveloped until 1952, when new owners moved in and gave the town its present name. Although Hurricane Hazel destroyed many of the early homes in 1954, the town was rebuilt and was home to six families by 1956. That same year, the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base was reactivated, which brought more residents and visitors to the area. Surfside Beach incorporated in 1964. During the next few years, the town continued grew through annexation. Today, Surfside Beach is a small city with its own local government, police chief and fire department. The laid-back atmosphere makes it a great place to relax or retire, but bustling Myrtle Beach is just up the road for those in search of excitement. ActivitiesSurfside Beach is about eight miles south of Myrtle Beach. The region is home to numerous attractions, including more than 100 golf courses and scores of restaurants, shops, theaters and entertainment venues.Golf is king in the Myrtle Beach area, and that's also true in Surfside Beach. Fishing, boating and other water sports remain popular as well.
